The long-awaited debut of Google AI Bard finally happened. We previously shared with you that the tech giant is working on Google Apprentice Bard AI. Just days after the news, Google Code Red alarm seems to be paying off with a little name change. The Google Bard AI chatbot is the company’s latest advancement in conversational artificial intelligence. This cutting-edge AI technology aims to revolutionize the information-gathering process and how we use search engines.
What is Google Bard AI?
Meet the expected “ChatGPT killer.” Using a set of deep learning algorithms known as “large language models,” the Google Bard AI chatbot can respond to questionnaires provided via text. The chatbot is built on LaMDA technology and is programmed to use the web to find the most “recent” answers to questions. Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai introduced the Google Bard AI chatbot in a blog post, showcasing the company’s recent priority on AI. Pichai has expressed his enthusiasm for adapting cutting-edge AI research and development to real-world problems.
Other organizations, such as OpenAI, have surpassed them in terms of AI developments and applications because of the rate of technology advancement and delayed decision-making at huge firms like Google. OpenAI concentrated on generating high-quality models and letting people discover their own uses for them, while Google worked on incorporating AI into their existing business plans.
Launching as a lightweight version of LaMDA in Google Search, the artificial intelligence chatbot Google Bard has the potential to revolutionize the way people find and use information online.
What is LaMDA?
LaMDA is “the language model” that people are afraid of. After a Google employee believed LaMDA was conscious, the AI became a topic of discussion due to the impression it gave off in its answers. In addition, the engineer hypothesized that LaMDA, like humans, expresses its anxieties through communication.
First and foremost, it is a statistical method for predicting the following words in a series based on the previous ones. LaMDA’s innovativeness lies in the fact that it may stimulate dialogue in a looser fashion than is allowed by task-based responses. So that the conversation can flow freely from one topic to another, a conversational language model needs to be familiar with concepts such as Multimodal user intent, reinforcement learning, and suggestions.
How to use the Google Bard AI chatbot?
If you are chosen as a beta tester, all you have to do to use the Google AI chatbot is open the Google app on your smartphone and tap on the chatbot icon. Like ChatGPT, enter your prompt and hit enter!
At that point, you can start a conversation by asking the chatbot questions or making requests. In addition, Google is actively attempting to improve and enhance the chatbot’s capabilities in order to provide new and exciting ways of interacting with information.

How to access Google Bard AI?
Currently, only a small number of people have access to the Google Bard AI link for testing purposes. To reduce the amount of time and energy spent on computation, Google is developing a “lightweight model version of LaMDA.”
Google Bard AI chatbot, known as Bard, is unfortunately not yet widely available for use. However, once the Google Bard AI link is shared, it will likely be integrated into Google Search and can be accessed by asking questions through the search bar. The chatbot draws information from the web to provide up-to-date answers to text prompts. While the exact release date of the Google Bard AI chatbot is still uncertain, Sunder Pichai said these on his Twitter account about its API usage:

It is designed to provide easy-to-digest answers to complex questions and can help with tasks such as planning a baby shower, comparing movies, and getting lunch ideas. It is not yet known if the chatbot will be available through other Google products such as Google Assistant or Google Maps.

The main distinction between Google Bard AI and ChatGPT is Google Bard AI’s ability to take real-time events into account when generating its responses. Google’s Bard AI has yet to make its appearance. But here’s what you should expect to be different from ChatGPT, according to the recent updates:
Google Apprentice Bard AI will be able to answer real-time questions.
You need to make one minor adjustment to your Google settings to get your regular search results when using Google Bard AI. In ChatGPT, only text responses are returned.
Google Apprentice Bard is based on Lambda. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is based on GPT.
ChatGPT has its own plagirim detector called AI Text Classifier. This feature is not yet available for Apprentice Bard AI.
Google Apprentice Bard AI is, for now, completely free. OpenAI recently launched its paid plan to users called ChatGPT Plus.

Google launches Bard, its answer to ChatGPT – here’s what it looks like

Google is now testing Bard, its answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. We also have gotten our first look at AI-powered features in Google Search.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai today announced the soft launch of Bard to a set “trusted testers,” showcasing what this early experimental release looks like with some examples.
We knew this was coming because Pichai mentioned it on the latest Google earnings call.
What Google’s AI features will look like in Search
Let’s first start with what ChatGPT-style AI will look like in Google Search – because that’s what everyone has been waiting to see.
Here is a screenshot Google provided. It shows how Googe Search uses AI to respond to long queries with a long AI-created response:

Pichai wrote:

And to be clear: Bard is separate from Google search. The above screenshot is highlighting the AI-powered features that will be rolling out on Google Search “soon.”
What Bard looks like
Here is another screenshot from Google showing how Bard, its standalone ChatGPT-style service, might respond to a question:

In this case, Bard is explaining new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old.
As you can see, there is no one right answer to this question.
What is Google Bard?
Google explains that Bard is an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications).
LaMDA was announced two years ago, at the 2021 Google I/O keynote, as Google’s next-generation language and conversation capabilities. It is now being used to create these answers for users.
Bard is powered by a lightweight model version of LaMDA, which requires “significantly less computing power,” Google said. Google said this will allow them to scale to more users while also allowing for more feedback.
Pichai also wrote:
“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.”
Bard is experimental
Google emphasized that Bard is experimental and they are excited for this “phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed.”
Who are trusted testers?
Google told us they are not the Search Quality Raters. Instead, they are a demographically and geographically diverse group of people external to Google.
These testers test Google’s products to help Google improve and understand how real users are likely to experience these products. Google said they work with a third-party supplier to provide this testing.
It is unclear how you or I can test out Bard before it launches more widely.
Attribution and citations
I asked Google how it plans to provide attribution and/or citations for its answers, either from Bard or in search results. Google did not have an immediate comment at the time this was published.
Why we care
It is fascinating to see how search and AI companies are adding human-like question-and-answer responses. With Bard, Google seems to be taking a similar approach to ChatGPT thus far, but it is early and I expect the user experience and interfaces will evolve rapidly.
How Google may handle attribution and citation – especially in search – is an interesting topic as well. Google has used AI to write knowledge panels for years, which is why Google does not always show attribution for some knowledge panels.
Earlier reports
Earlier this week, we reported Google had started work on its own version of ChatGPT, named Apprentice Bard, as well as testing a new search design integrating chat:
When a question is entered, the search results show a gray bubble directly under the search bar, offering more human-like responses than typical search results. Directly beneath that, the page suggests several follow-up questions related to the first one. Under that, it shows typical search results, including links and headlines.
Here’s how Google responded to the report:
“We have long been focused on developing and deploying AI to improve people’s lives. We believe that AI is foundational and transformative technology that is incredibly useful for individuals, businesses and communities, and as our AI Principles outline, we need to consider the broader societal impacts these innovations can have. We continue to test our AI technology internally to make sure it’s helpful and safe, and we look forward to sharing more experiences externally soon.”
What about Microsoft and ChatGPT?
Meanwhile, Microsoft has invested heavily in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Microsoft is rumored to be bringing GPT-4 to Bing search in some way in the near future. And we have already seen early screenshots of Bing’s interface with ChatGPT-style integrated into search.
Many companies, especially those in search, are taking these technologies seriously after the explosive popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Days after unveiling its efforts on “Bard,” an AI-powered and Google Search enhanced chatbot, Google has begun working to bring Bard to ChromeOS.
Update: Google appears to be undoing some of its work related to Bard for Chromebooks.

Use of AI chatbots has been on the rise in recent weeks, between the launch of ChatGPT and the preview release of Microsoft’s new Bing. While Google showed its own vision of the conversational search experience on Monday, the company was not yet ready to let the public test its “Bard” AI.
Today, we’ve gotten our first hints of how Google intends to integrate Bard into its products. In a new set of code changes, we find ChromeOS is preparing “Conversational Search” as an experimental feature. Judging from the name — ChromeOS has other ongoing “Launcher experiments” you can try — we believe that this particular integration for Bard will only be available to those who opt in through the chrome://flags page for the foreseeable future.

Reading between the lines, “conversational search” already implies what Google has shown thus far about Bard. Elsewhere, though, we’ve found a related code change that’s simply titled “brad,” which seems like a humorous, intentional misspelling of “Bard.”
Update 2/13: Shortly after our report was published, Google began stripping back some of the work toward introducing Bard to ChromeOS. Specifically, the flag shown above has been removed, some work has been hidden from the public, and the code that mentions “brad” has been “Abandoned.”
That said, some of the relevant work still remains, meaning the effort likely hasn’t been ditched altogether. We speculate that the company simply isn’t ready for its exact plans for Bard in ChromeOS to be discovered just yet.
Digging into the code, if you have the conversational search feature enabled, ChromeOS will ditch the built-in search features of the launcher (which searches files, apps, and the web) and replace it with a chat with Bard. Things are still very much in a work-in-progress state, so it’s possible this design could change before launch.
Just as you’d expect, Bard on Chromebooks will appear as its own separate page of the ChromeOS bubble launcher — like how Google Assistant appears today — with a scrollable conversation history and a search bar, presumably used to start a new conversation.

It will be interesting to see the places that Google chooses to integrate Bard or any other conversational experience into its existing products. In the case of ChromeOS, Bard seems to be directly replacing the launcher’s Google Search integration, though there’s certainly a case to be made for Bard being integrated with Assistant.
In either case, the ChromeOS launcher doesn’t seem like the most obvious position for Google to prioritize as a launching point for its ChatGPT/Bing AI competitor. It’s possible this may speak to Google’s intention to rapidly make Bard available across multiple platforms, but this is purely speculation for now.
As Google’s work toward bringing Bard to ChromeOS is only just getting underway, it likely won’t arrive for Chromebook owners to try for themselves until version 112 in April or 113 in May at the earliest. The latter would likely see the arrival overlap with the company’s annual Google I/O conference, the timing for which has not yet been announced.
